The Feisty Fiance (Harlequin Romance, 3588)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (February, 1900)
Author: Jessica Steele

The Feisty Fiancee
Yancie is a self centered egotistical adolescent. She lies habitually, fails to exercise even a little self control over her mouth and displays no respect for the owner of the company she works for.
I would wonder at a man who is in a position of this type of responsibility falling for a young woman who behaves in such a juvenile manner. Wouldn't be buying stock in that company.
Our author tells a very one sided story. Thompson's thought and feelings don't seem to enter into the fabric of the tale until the very end.
Our author also fails to take care of the details. Such as quoting distances in miles rather than kilometeres. We are after all reading a story that takes place in and around London.

:|
Yancie has never had a job before except cleaning her stepfathers house, but she loves her new job that her cousin helped her get as a driver. Yancie, however, does not seem to take her job seriously. She uses the car for her own personal interest while on and off the clock. Yancie never seems to see a problem with what she does, but her boss Thomson most certainly does. Yancie finds that the man drives her nuts, but she also finds herself attracted to him.

The book seems one sided. It is told only from Yancie's perspective, so we never know what Thompson is thinking until the very end. This lets the reader really get to know her and I kept asking myself-Can this woman really be that stupid? Not only does she not take her job seriously, but she talks down to her boss and lies to him on a regular bases.

I bought all three books in the series and they are all alike--the women characters come off as sassy and the men rich and powerful. The book was okay, but it could have been better.

The Civil War Archive: The History of the American Civil War in Documents
Published in Hardcover by Black Dog & Leventhal Pub (July, 2000)
Authors: Henry Steele Commager and Erik Bruun
Average review score:

"The Civil War Archive"- A Deceptive Title
Originally, this book was titled "The Blue and the Gray" and was fine as it was. Apparently, to sound more impressive and authoritative, the editors decided to call it "The Civil War Archive: The History of the American Civil War in Documents". This title is extremely misleading. Over 800 pages long, anyone who approaches it would think it is a reference book that the reader could go to and examine the complete speeches and documents that had so much of an influence on the war. Unfortunately, the editors have taken bits and pieces out, apparently for readability. In the case of the Emancipation Proclamation, the parts taken out completely change the character and meaning of the original. The Confederate Constitution is full of holes. There are other examples as well. The objectivity of the original documents is lost as the reader is dependent on what the editor feels is important.
To be sure, there are good parts in the book, but they are the first person accounts that were in the original. If it is read for that, then the book has value, but if reliance is made upon the documents contained...other sources must be referenced.

The Essential Book of Gay Manners & Etiquette
Published in Paperback by Harperperennial Library (June, 1995)
Authors: Steven Petrow and Nick Steele
Average review score:

Not essential at all
The authors try hard but end up writing what is unintentionally hilarious. Actually has sections like what "the properly dressed leather man wears." Meant to be helpful, it ends up being immediatedly dated and campy.

His Pretend Mistress (Larger Print, 541)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (April, 1902)
Author: Jessica Steele
Average review score:

Didn't like the female character
Back Cover description: The mistress masquerade...Thank goodness for charming, suave and handsome city hotshot Harris Quillan! Mallon had thought she was stranded and homeless until Harris came along. After hearing her story, he didn't hesitate to offer her a job as his housekeeper. It all seemed too good to be true--Mallon had found work she really enjoyed, in a beautiful country house. But then she discovered that it was too good to be true. She was quite happy being mistress of Harris's home, but not of his heart...Whatever was Harris thinking of when he insisted she pretend to be his girlfriend?

Mallon runs out of the house where she has been housekeeper because the owner attacks her. She's had problems with a step-father and step-brother. As she is wandering down a deserted road the hero stops. I just couldn't believe she would get in a car with the guy. Not after being attacked. He has a cell phone, he should have called the police. If nothing else Mallon was in shock. I liked Harris, I just wasn't crazy about Mallon's choices, and I had trouble with the whole story.

Lights! Camera! Action Dog! (Wishbone Mysteries, No 11)
Published in Paperback by Lyrick Studios (August, 1998)
Authors: Nancy Butcher, Alexander Steele, Brad Strickland, Rick Duffield, Kathryn Yingling, and Kevin Ryan
Average review score:

Don't waste your money.
Unless you know absolutely nothing about video production, don't waste your money on this book. It's far too basic. There are hardly any illustrations of camera and production techniques. Even though the author provides some praticle ideas about producing music videos and parodies of commercials, he glosses over way too many ideas. Whycouldn't the heprovide some actual samples of work he did students in the area of video production? Teachers need a book like this, but this one needs to be updated and revised.

The ABCs of Indoor Palm Trees
Published in Paperback by Park Place Pubns (01 September, 1998)
Author: Joelle Steele
Average review score:

This Is Not A Book!
This 40 page book is fairly informative but more of a pamphlet than anything else. It looks like it was printed on an office laser printer and stapled together with a cover printed at Kinko's. This book is certainly not worth it and I assume much of this info could be found in encyclopedias at your local library. Best to stay away from this one until it grows up a bit.

The Essential Margaret Fuller (American Women Writers Series)
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (June, 1992)
Authors: Margaret Fuller, Jeffrey Steele, and Jeffrey Steel
Average review score:

Minor talent
Fuller is a minor talent of the Transcendentalist movement, marginally interesting for her proto-feminism. (Actually not at all interestingly). It is doubtful whether Emerson and Thoreau are not outdated; Fuller is best forgotten.

When Even Angels Wept: The Senator Joseph McCarthy Affair--A Story Without a Hero
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (February, 1973)
Author: Robert V. P. Steele
Average review score:

You're better off reading cereal boxes.
This garbled biography of Senator Joe McCarthy is billed to be "an objective reappraisal of The Senator Joseph McCarthy Affair", but degenerates rapidly.Rather, it is a factual free-for-all wherein the author doesn't bother to provide documentation for any statement he makes. He even goes so far as to cite to incidents occurring in towns and counties that do not exist in Wisconsin. Despite the book's fascinating subject, the author fails miserably to retain the reader's interest. I am heartily sorry for anyone who actually bought this book.
